BTSA-BR Assigned on June 9th 2015, when UNESCO announced its recognition to the public for the preservation of ecosystems and management harmonization between human and nature in the area of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (BTSNP) and Raden Soeryo Grand Forest Park (RSGFP). BTSA fullfill the three functions of biosphere reserve which are: conservation; development; and logistic support.
In terms of conservastion, BTSA-BR has an important role for biodiversity conservation of the East Java Mountains, especially in the core zone (area of BTSNP and RSGFP). In terms of development, BTSA-BR is potentially improved as sustainable development area. The buffer zone and the transition area potentially produce horticultural plants (vegetables and fruits), crops (rice and annual crops) and plantation (coffee, chocolate); animal husbandry. Furthermore, the most famous tourism site in this area is BTSNP with spectacular scenery, amazing biodiversity and the famous ethnic: Tenggerese. Meanwhile, in terms of logistic support BTSA-BR is managed under multi-stakeholders collaborative management. The management program includes support for demonstration projects, environmental education, training, research and monitoring related to local, regional, national and global issues of conservation and sustainable development.
Location and Area
BTSA-BR lies in the geographical position between 170 25’ 15 ”S - 1130 15’ 0”E to 70 25′ 15″ S - 1120 18″ 45′ E and 70 52′ 30″ S - 1120 18′ 45″ E to 80 15′ 0″ S - 1130 15′ 0″ E. It is administratively located in East Java province and covers an area of 6 districts (Malang; Pasuruan; Probolinggo; Lumajang; Jombang; and Mojokerto) and 4 cities (Malang, Batu; Pasuruan; and Probolinggo).
Zonation
BTSA-BR, with a total area of 413,375.57 ha, consists of a core zone (78,144.5 ha); a buffer zone (96,349.56 ha) and a transition zone (238,880.51 ha). The core zone consists of BTSNP area (50,276.2 ha), managed by central government and RSGFP (27,868.3 ha), managed by local government.

Harmonization in Managing BTSA-BR
“Exotic Nature of Ancient Java”, describes harmonization in the management of the area with the elements in it: nature, human, culture and religion. The Core Zone is a reflection of conservation, both on the biodiversity and its ecosystems, as well as on the culture and the religion. The existence of the buffer zone and the transition zone, is expected to function optimally to fortify the core zone of the efforts of regional destruction. The integration between the laws of conservation management and local knowledge that applied in harmony is a major factor that determines the feasibility of the BTSA-BR region.
