Javan Endemic Fauna in BTSNP

1. Javan Hawk Eagle (Nisaetus bartelsi)
Javan Hawk-Eagle is an endemic raptor to Java Island. Due to its identical appearance to the state symbol of Indonesia, lead this species designated as Indonesian endangered species since 1992. The number of this species has decline as habitat disturbance.In BTSNP area, Javan Hawk-Eagle can be found in the area of Coban Trisula, Ranupani, Jabung, Ireng-ireng and Ranu Tompe. Trees which usually being a habitat for Javan Hawk-Eagle among others are: Trema orientalis, Ficus sp, Lithocarpus sp and Litsea sp.
2. Javan Langur (Trachypithecus auratus)
Javan langur is an endemic species to the islands of Java, Bali, Lombok, Sempu and Nusa Barong. Javan langurs live in groups, which each group consists of 7-20 individual langur with a male as the group leader. It is a diurnal-arboreal species. They consume leaves, fruits and flowers, and sometimes insects and bark. These animals can be met in some forested areas in BTSNP
3. Javan Frogmount (Batrachostomus javensis)
The Javan Frogmount has a large beak and a bit bent similar to frog, which functioned to catch insects. This nocturnal bird is endemic to Java Island. During the day it perches on tree branches which are usually not far from the ground. This bird is very rare and not easily found in the region of BTSNP, especially because its camouflage is good enough so that it can deceive the observer. Noted, it ever found in the area of Ranu Darungan, Ranu Tompe, Coban Trisula and Ireng-ireng.
4. Horned Frog (Meophrys montana Kuhl & Van Hasselt, 1822)
The horned frog is a species of Megophryidae family. An incognito perfect color and its body shape in the forest floor, causing this frog difficult to be recognized. It is often hiding under the forest litter, and it actively explores the forest up to the river bank floor only at night. The tadpole phase has a mouth like a funnel, usually found on the stagnant river. It is medium to large in size, which is 60-95 mm. Males are smaller than females. Noted, it has been ever found in the area of Coban Trisula.
5. Jelarang (Ratufa bicolor)
This squirrel is diurnal – arboreal species, member of Ratufa genus. It has a large size, with a body length between 35 to 60 cm. Plus tail, the length can reach 120 cm. These animal lives solitary, consumes seeds, leaves and fruits as his favorite food. Its fur is dark brown to black with the bottom (abdomen and chest) are white. In the area of BTSNP, these animals can be found in western, eastern and southern part of Mt. Semeru.
